Description

Jamun or Black Plum is a small fruit with a dark purple hue bordering to black. The flesh of this berry is pinkish white in contrast. It is known by various names like jamli, java plum, blackberry, black plum, jambul, jambolan, jambus, kala jamun etc.Jamun is the native berry of south Asian countries like India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. While summer is the peak season when this berry is available, it is produced all through the year in subtropical and tropical climates. Jamun is a juicy berry with a tart and sweet taste depending on the degree of its ripeness. It also leaves a sharp astringent aftertaste in the mouth. Jamun also has slender seeds that must not be consumed. The dark purple colour of jamun skin also tends to stain the tongue and lips that can remain up to a few hours. But the colour is completely harmless. Jamun is loaded with nutrition that makes it a great snack to have in summer. The dark colour of the skin is because of anthocyanin, which is a potent phytonutrient. This provides the body with an ample amount of antioxidants, that protect the cells in the body from harm caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. Jamun is rich in naturally occurring sugar called fructose and contains very few calories. 100 grams of Jamun gives you just 62 calories and 18 mg vitamin C, 15 mg calcium, 15 mg phosphorus, 26.5 mg sodium, 55 mg potassium, 5 mg magnesium and small amounts of thiamine, riboflavin, carotene, folic acid, fibre and negligible fat. Jamun is loaded in glucose and water content, making it a suitable fruit to have during the hot summer months.

Each part of the Jamun tree has something to offer. It has a special place in Ayurvedic medicinal culture due to its numerous health benefits. Some of them are Anti Diabetic, Aids Digestion, Good for Skin, Increases Haemoglobin, Promotes a healthy heart, Maintains Oral health, and Good for Liver. The bark, seeds and leaves of the jamun tree is considered to be beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. The seeds are dried and then ground into a fine powder, which is then regularly consumed with food or water to control blood sugar levels. The paste of jamun seeds with cow milk, lemon, gram flour and a few drops of almond oil and rose water makes jamun face pack that can safeguard the skin from discolouration and other ailments. A decoction made with the extract of leaves, bark and seeds of jamun also gets rid of a range of oral problems.
