Custard Apple is one of the finest fruits in India. It is found in the wild form in many parts, cultivated and growing regions include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarath, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states. The fruit’s growing popularity will likely increase. The scientific names are Sugar apple (Annona squamosal) and cherimoya (Annona cherimola), closely related, similar-tasting fruits with only a few differences. They’re called sitaphals, sharifas ((Hindi, Manipuri), Katal (Assamese), Sitapalam, Sita pazham (Tamil), Sita phalamu (Telugu), Ata (Bengali) depending on the region. Ramphal is also known as custard apple or bullock’s heart, but less popular than that of Sitaphal. The fruit is sweet and pleasant, varies in shape. These natural fruits are very hardy, medium in growth, and deciduous in nature. The fruits are generally used as fresh, while some products or mixed fruits like custard powders, ice- creams are prepared from the fruits. You can add custard apple to your diet in multiple
ways. Mix them into yogurt or oatmeal or add in your glass of smoothie. The fruit can be kept in the fridge for up to three days. Besides high nutritive value, it has also a high medicinal value. Unripe fruits, seeds, leaves, and roots are considered and used in medicinal preparations.
Custard apples are high in B6, a critical nutrient that aids the body with protecting the immune system, alleviating PMS, regulating hormones, protecting against anemia, and alleviating skin conditions like acne, hair loss, eczema, and dry skin. These fruits are also rich in Omega 3s. The fruit is an excellent source of vitamin A, C, and manganese, high in energy too. Humans cannot produce these nutrients, so they must be consumed in one’s diet. These essential fatty acids assist with human growth and development, promote brain health, lower the risk of arthritis, cancer, and inflammation, and combats mood swings, fatigue, and boost memory.
Locals throughout India have used parts of the fruit and tree for a number of traditional remedies. The book, “Indian Medicinal Plants,” states that cherimoyas and sugar apples have been used to treat the following:
